YOUTH n JAZZ - BURSARY
(To ENTER, please see instructions near the bottom of the page.)
The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club Inc is an incorporated association, registered with the Office of Fair Trading as a Not for Profit club – Some of its aims include ‘keeping live music alive!’; bringing ‘the best of the best’ in Jazz to members and supporters and to support and encourage young local musical talent believing that “Youth are our Future!”
The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club Inc has a Constitution which may be viewed on the web site by going to the Membership page. It also advises that it carries a $20,000,000.00 Public Liability Insurance.
In accordance with this, the Management Committee have decided to offer a bursary to students in years 11 and 12, as encouragement to continue their studies in music, but particularly with a Jazz influence. A requirement will be for these emerging artists, to be living in the Sunshine Coast Region – as per the Regional Council boundary– and to be attending a school/college within the same area.
The bursary being offered will be for the use of furthering their studies (with an emphasis on jazz) and/or towards purchase of musical instruments. As this is the first year the club has ventured into such a project, it will be a little bit experimental but it is hoped that it will become an annual event with added features.
Preliminary Judging will be by way of the entrants completing application forms and submitting the forms, along with a video of an entry performance – which should be submitted by supplying to the club a ‘YouTube’ link to their entry – as per the entry form. (Directions to be available on the web site) - It is imperative that parental/guardian authorisation is obtained and signed on entry form.
There are two sections available as follows:
SECTION “A” - This is open to song writers to present original compositions - prize money will be separate for this section to section “B” – some mentoring may be available if required.
SECTION “B” – This is open to Vocalists, Instrumentalists and/or Trios presenting ‘cover’ songs – it is hoped that teachers at the various schools will assist with guidance and encouragement to students in their preparation for the preliminary judging – recorded backing is allowed for these videos.
JOINT ENTRIES: Should an entrant wish to enter both sections, that would be acceptable –
Each entrant is required to present TWO songs with their application.
PRELIMINARY JUDGING: Entries will close on 30 September 2019 when preliminary judging will begin – it is anticipated that 10 entrants will be selected to compete in a final judging. All contestants will be advised of the results of the preliminary judging by 15 October 2019 – this would give the finalists time to prepare for the FINAL JUDGING which will be held 23 NOVEMBER 2019
FINALS: To be HELD AT THE PELICANS ROOM, CALOUNDRA POWER BOAT CLUB where a professional Jazz band will provide backing for each entrant/s – no taped music will be allowed – entrants will be required to provide their charts to the band where necessary. Rehearsals will be held between 10.30 am and 12.30 am
Following a break, entrants will perform for judging between 1.30pm and 4pm and winners will be announced on the day with presentation of prizes.
This will be a FAMILY DAY at the club and to encourage families and friends to participate and give support, entry fees will be kept at an affordable price ie
Adults $10 ; Family of up to 4 - $20 ; Of course no charge for entrants.
JUDGES: Preliminary Judging will be by well-respected local musicians/teachers
Finals Judges: It is hoped to have experienced and well-respected judges travel from Brisbane for the final judging
It should be noted that the judges decision/s will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
